I called Kate as soon as I stepped outside the hospital.

“It’s a bit busy here, Harry,” she said instead of a greeting.

“What's the word out there?” I asked.

“Voron is on the run, in Nashville.”

“How the hell did they manage to pull it off?” I asked.

“Money, Harry, lots of money, big money. They’re still trying to figure it out, but apparently, the riot was staged by a cadre of heavily bribed prisoners. They kept the riot going and escalating. In addition, several of the death row guards were also bribed; two for sure, but possibly three. They waited for the riot to peak, then they disabled the two remaining guards, got Voron out of his cell, dressed him in a guard’s uniform and cap, covered his face and shirt with blood, and hauled him out to a waiting ambulance.

“The ambulance was stopped and searched at the main gate on the way out, but the guards there saw only a badly wounded and unconscious guard—apparently leaking copious quantities of blood—two EMTs and the driver, and they let them through.”

“Dammit. Any dead?” I asked.

“Surprisingly, no… which is amazing, considering what Voron is. But it seems the rioters went out of their way to injure as many guards as possible, but not to kill. There were eleven at the last count, most of them with broken bones.”

“That must have been intentional,” I said. “To cause as much mayhem and damage as possible to draw attention away from the real target, Voron.”

“So it would seem,” she said thoughtfully. “Whatever, it worked. He got away.”

“How about Tesak and Brick?” I said, already figuring out the timeline in my head. “Any signs of them being involved? We know they must have been.”

“It’s possible they were in Nashville. There’s a BOLO out for them, there and here, but so far, nothing.”

“Anything on the prison CCTV security system?”

“I’d say there is, has to be, but Nashville isn’t talking to us. They’re trying to keep it in-house, but you know how that goes, right?”

“Oh yeah, only too well. I’d say some folks at Riverbend are in deep doo-doo. You’ll keep me updated, right?”

“I'll let you know if something comes up. Gotta go Harry. Talk to you later.”

“Thanks, Kate,” I said, but she'd already clicked off.

I jumped into the Maxima and headed west on East 3rd toward my office.

So, the two hitmen were in Nashville, I thought, which means they couldn't have attacked Rainer… Or were they? Sheesh… Who bribed the guards and organized the escape team if they didn’t? That would have taken a lot of planning and, as Kate said, a whole lot of cash… Well, Voron has that! So… it must have been Tesak… Yeah, Tesak, because someone had to plan the op, coordinate the prison riot, pay off the guards, and organize the med team. Geez… Yeah, Tesak. Brick doesn’t have the brains.

I turned left on Lindsey, right on East 4th, then left onto Georgia Avenue, my mind churning all the way.

But… if the two of them were out of town, that would mean Rainer was attacked by someone else, and for some other reason.
